I Hit My Head on the Value of Old Friends

I woke up this morning feeling like I hit my head.  I didn’t have a headache.  I wasn’t dizzy.   There was no head injury…I was back from vacation.

It was a REAL vacation.  Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, spiritually.  My entire self was in another world.  So, what made this trip so profound, so different?

Could’ve been location – relaxed, pristine, tropical.

Could’ve been the chickens – they had a blast, gave me little sassiness and were in wonder of a place they’d never been before.

Could’ve been me – I was relaxed, wasn’t pressured under a schedule, geniunely enjoyed my children and watched them have new experiences.

Ultimately, it was a combination of these things while spending time with a lifelong friend.  We all have our person (and if you feel like you don’t, you really need to pick up the phone and call her – it’s been way too long!)  You know, that person who knew you “back when”; back when you did stupid things, dated stupid people, you know…when you were stupid.

That friend knows you at your core – whether you’re in touch with your true self or not right now.  Just talking with her can remind you of your dreams, your hopes, what you really want out of life.  In short, she helps you get perspective.

After spending time with my person, I realize how caught up in this daily grind thing I’ve been.  I’ve been hit over the head and shot between the eyes with the truth!  It’s time to:

  • Loosen up a bit and stop taking life so seriously
  • Stop putting so much importance on the little stuff
  • Listen to my own wisdom

No one can reintroduce you to yourself quicker than an old friend.  They have perspective – and they can effortlessly help you get yours back.

  1. I know just what you mean. Even though that friend for me lives two houses behind me I do not see her enough. Nowhere near enough. I’m going to remedy that though and go give her a call. I hear a backyard swing and some coffee calling our names. 😉

Good luck with your new blog. (I followed over from your following me on twitter) I’m hoping to have mine open soon too. Hopefully you’ll come visit!
